Elsie Sanchez is well regarded by many museum curators and directors, astute art critics, and discerning contemporary art collectors for her subtle, sophisticated, abstract paintings, which have an iconic strength and emotional resonance. The artist achieves this rare blend of pictorial vigor and nuance through her mastery of painting technique and her embrace of the full range of human feelings.

She has won awards from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and earned additional awards in many nationally juried Ohio State Fair exhibitions. Also, her work has been chosen for many nationally juried Ohio Art League exhibitions.

Critical Excerpts

"Sanchez's energy-infused paintings are spatial and textural. They play with pattern yet are entirely organic . . . Her oblong- and rectangular-patterned canvases are constructed of surfaces that are built up, then pulled away and built up again. The formalist depth and spatial tension yield an expressionistic result that is more than the sum of its parts . . . Sanchez seems to be channeling Mark Rothko in these expansive statements, similarly evoking emotion and spirituality through large, colorful canvases."

Amy Davis, The Columbus Dispatch, 2010

"Sanchez has never lost her sense of the fragility of existence, and of the possibility for progress to come out of even the greatest loss. That sense permeates her paintings- works of poetry and power that inform without becoming didactic, works that treat tough times and good ones with sensitivity that rises above sentimentality."

Sharon Kokot, The Columbus Dispatch, 1999
